A sunset engagement shoot at Southbourne Beach, Dorset

Sunset at the beach that makes everything feel a little bit special, doesn't it?

I recently met up with this lovely couple at Southbourne Beach for an engagement shoot, and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful evening.

They haven't booked their wedding just yet, but they wanted to celebrate being engaged and have some lovely photographs of the two of them at this exciting time in their lives. And honestly, I think that's such a lovely reason to have a shoot.

An evening at Southbourne Beach

We met up in the evening and spent some time wandering along the beach, making the most of that gorgeous golden light as the sun started to set.

One of my favourite things about shoots like this is getting to know the people I'm photographing. As we walked, I got to hear their love story, how they met and a little bit about their plans for the future. It's always lovely hearing how everyone's story begins, and it makes the photographs feel that little bit more personal.

There was no big plan for the evening, just a walk along the beach, plenty of chatting and lots of lovely moments to capture along the way.

Southbourne Beach is such a beautiful spot for engagement photography in Dorset. You've got the sea, the open beach and the most gorgeous light when the sun starts to go down. It's perfect if you want photographs that feel relaxed and natural, without anything being too posed or overthought.

You don't need to have your wedding booked!

I think there's sometimes an idea that you need to have your wedding venue booked, a date set and all your plans in place before you can think about engagement photos. But you really don't!

Being engaged is a pretty special time in itself, and it's lovely to have something that celebrates that chapter of your lives, completely separate from wedding planning.

An engagement shoot is also a great way to get some photographs of the two of you just as you are now. Before the wedding plans take over, before the big day arrives and before life moves on to the next exciting thing.

And if you're a little unsure about being in front of the camera, it's a really lovely way to ease into having your photos taken, too.

Natural photographs, without the awkward posing

My approach to photography is always to keep things relaxed. I'm not going to ask you to spend the whole shoot standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera!

Instead, we'll have a wander, chat, laugh and capture things as they happen, with a little direction along the way when you need it.

Some of my favourite photographs come from those little in-between moments. The looks you give each other, the laughter, the way you naturally reach for one another when you're walking along. Those are the things that make your photographs feel like you.

We captured so many gorgeous images during this Southbourne Beach engagement shoot, making the most of the beautiful sunset and the time we had together.

Thinking about an engagement shoot in Dorset?

Whether you've already booked your wedding or you're simply enjoying being engaged and haven't started planning yet, I'd love to help you celebrate it.

There are so many lovely locations for engagement photos around Dorset, but there's something particularly special about an evening by the sea. Southbourne Beach is a favourite for its relaxed coastal feel and beautiful evening light.

If you're looking for a Dorset engagement photographer and would love some natural, relaxed photographs of the two of you, an engagement shoot is a lovely place to start.

No need to know how to pose, no pressure to be anything other than yourselves. Just the two of you, somewhere beautiful, making memories together.

And if you're still deciding on your wedding plans, that's absolutely fine, too!

If this sounds like your kind of thing, get in touch. I'd love to hear your story.
